Update on Building Safety Issues at East Village
June 22, 2020EVML are preparing for engineers to carry out a detailed inspection of every block at East Village. The inspections will look at the make up of the external walls and the type of cladding and insulation used. This work is being done to check the external walls meet the standards required by the government. The government have asked all owners of tall buildings to carry out these inspections as part of their response to the Grenfell fire. Some inspections have already been done and EVML have checked the materials used on the outsides of the buildings.
EVML are working with their engineers to get the inspection programme underway swiftly. We’ll let you know when the inspections are planned for your blocks and tell you the outcome. The proposal is to start inspections in July. Some inspections will be undertaken from within empty flats where the engineers will take off the layers of the wall to inspect the fire breaks in the external wall. This won’t be necessary in every block.
Following the review of the materials used on the buildings EVML are arranging to remove some façades made of Aluminium Composite Materials (ACM) in plots N02 and N07. At the moment engineers are doing some more detailed inspections to inform the design work for the tender. This involves taking off some of the external facades to check the materials and structures behind. We’ll keep everyone updated about the progress of the work. There’s no immediate danger for residents and EVML have been sharing the findings and their plans with the London Fire Brigade. We’d like to say thank you to those residents who let the engineers do some work on their balconies or outside their flat.
We know that many leaseholders have been waiting for the inspection reports for a long time. In January we issued a timeline for inspection that has not been kept to. We know this is really frustrating – and it’s not acceptable. EVML have been able to resolve the issues and get the work started again. They have engaged additional façade and fire safety engineers to re-launch the programme. We are expecting inspections to take place across the Village for the rest of the year. We’ll put the timeline for inspection on our website at the end of this week (26 June). This continues to cause lots of difficulties for some leaseholders and we’re really sorry we’ve not been able to get leaseholders the information they need quickly enough.
